RABBIT PRAYER

Oh, I forgot to tell you all, a whole pack of rabbits, hopped up to my back door last October, so what do you say to a few hundred rabbits, well, they knocked so loudly it woke me up from a deep, deep sleep. alarmed, i wondered who could be there at that time, some drunks or nuts? Did not see anyone, as i peeked out, so turned on the floodlights, whoa! the whole yard and alley full of rabbits, yes, rabbits, all sitting on their haunches, waiting like for a concert to start, all the bunny eyes drilled on me, whew! “yes”, I let out, more of a exclamation than greeting. I asked the furry crowd, “What you want?” Wondering if my neighbors or my wife saw them, too. And, thinking, rabbits don’t talk human speak, do they? When a Big Fat One, guess, the head rabbit said, “You, the Dakota called Buffalo?” Oh, no, me thinks, I’m in trouble here or going totally insane, a low “no’ stubbled out of me. We are leaving the city, cannot live here, anymore, too unhealthy!” “What can I do?” I uttered as i realized this was true, i was cold in my briefs. “You are the only two-legged we can talk to, the medicine man told us to come here, you know, the one from your rez.” I knew. Us, Rabbits make it green, not all the ferterlizier and chemicals being thrown on everything, we make it holy and it won’t grow strong without us, it may all dry up and turn brown without our ceremonial prayers. Would you pray in our place, everyday, we will teach you our prayer. Here it is!” It was beautiful and simple, “Creator God, Thank you for all the green holy around us, we love you.” ” Oh, ok, i can do that, that is all, alright.” And, before, i could blink, they vanished like the dinosauers, but it has stayed green. They had said if it returned and stayed green they would come back, so i pray everyday, and then one day, i noticed, they were all back. but I keep praying the rabbit prayer everyday still!
